Mapping AI in Teacher Education: Behind the Scenes of WP2

As part of the AI-Teach project, our Work Package 2 (WP2) Mapping Team has been working intensively to chart how Artificial Intelligence is currently being integrated into teacher education across Europe. Rather than jumping to conclusions, our focus is on building a solid evidence base—one that reflects both innovation and reality.

We have just finalized our literature review, which synthesizes key academic and policy sources on AI in education. From ethical frameworks to pedagogical models, the review highlights – amongst other things – the growing emphasis on responsible AI use and teacher agency.

Over the last few months, we have also screened several European curricula (and institutional guidelines) to understand how AI is being embedded – or not – into formal teacher education. The landscape is diverse: some countries have clear AI literacy goals, while others rely heavily on individual teacher initiative.

We have also been analyzing 20 best practice case studies, selected from across Europe. These range from creative classroom applications to national-level initiatives, and help us identify shared strengths, recurring challenges, and emerging trends. These best practices help us to build a solid base and be forward-looking as well.

Right now, we are in the middle of preparing focus group interviews with educators, teacher trainers, students, AI experts etc. These conversations will help us understand the current experiences and institutional realities, adding depth to our findings.

And – although still in the brainstorming phase – we are also curating a series of pioneering teaching videos to showcase effective AI use in diverse educational contexts.

All of this work – literature review, curriculum screenings, case study analysis, and focus group interviews – will  be integrated into our upcoming mapping report. This report will not only synthesize our findings, but also serve as a foundation for developing the content portfolios within WP2.
